Delirious?

My Favorite "Christian" band is called Delirious? They have just split up after years of being together and pushing the Christian music envelope forward. They have a sound that is something like U2. They have written songs that are played by worship teams in churches throughout the world. They don't really have any unofficial music available but you can stream all their music at their web site. My favorite has always been the live double CD called "Access:D". I love the crowd participation. Anyway this is not what you might think of Christian music to be. It rocks! But it rocks the message of God's love for the world and His wanting to have relationship with us through His one and only begotten son Jesus. While you are at the site check out the rare tracks for their cover of the U2 song Pride. Martin Smith is the one who writes the lyrics and sings. He also plays some guitar. His lyrics are amazing and truly inspired. Stu G. plays the lead guitar parts (sounds sort of like Edge from U2)and has no equal in Christian music.

So here is where you can check them out.

Santana, August 1992

These two Santana shows both have members of the band Phish sitting in as special guests. I have seen Santana many times and they are always amazing. I like the feel good enviroment. I like that Jesus is in the mix too. I'm not a big fan of the vacuum cleaner solo, but the rest is very good and the sound it top notch, especially the Concord show. The above artwork is a stage backgroung that I have seen Santana use. I'm uncertain if it was used for this tour however.

Jeff White Band, 4-26-2000

Jeff White has played guitar in Alison Krauss' "Union Station" and was one of Tim O'Brien's "O'Boys". And he has a long history of playing with Vince Gill. He has played a lot with Del McCoury and the McCoury brothers, and was a member of The Flatheads. White's lead vocal work and guitar picking are top notch. This show is pretty much just a McCoury Boys show with Jeff White leading the way as the front man. This is some great bluegrass, and this is another great soundboard from The Station Inn.

A Ghost Story Part Two

This is part two of my version of a ghost story. It is about the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) and how we can have a relationship with Him that brings life changing power into our lives.

Well I left you with a question "Why doesn’t a follower of Christ who is “sanctified” (in other words living according to the word and in God’s will) not have evidence of powers of The Holy Spirit like the apostles had of healing, prophecy, words of knowledge, speaking in tongues?" After all it says in Acts 1:8 “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you”. And why aren’t believers doing “greater things than Him when the Holy Spirit comes”. As Jesus promised?
Maybe you don’t believe that believers get any more than what you have at salvation, and many are content to just be saved but not do greater things than Jesus. Many believe the powers ceased with the apostles (and this is where a division in Christianity is formed). Many think they received the Holy Spirit at salvation and that is all there is, nothing more. But I think not and I show why I feel this way.
First off let’s look at an event that happened in Acts 19:1-6. Paul asked these believers “Did you not receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said “We have not so much as heard weather there is a Holy Spirit.” So in Acts 19:6 it says “the Holy Spirit came upon them”. So here we see people who are believers with a deficiency of the Holy Spirit. And latter they receive more.
The Old Testament is a picture or illustration of the spiritual experience. It illustrates with physical pictures experiences what we can have in our spiritual life. Well I’m a slow learner you see, like a child in these things so like most children I need pictures in my book to aid with my comprehension.
So the picture of being born again in the Old Testament is The Israelites being freed from slavery in Egypt. Just like them Jesus set me free from my slavery to sin. Just like them Jesus led me out of captivity to a place where I can follow God. But just like the Israelites in the desert following God I know there can be more.
Like I said in the first part of this “Holy Ghost Story” Much of Christianity today offers us life after death (Salvation). But most people are looking for a life before death. Jesus did not just come to prepare us to die but to teach us how to live. He wasn’t just about getting us up to heaven after we die but about bringing a taste of God’s kingdom to earth. Jesus spoke of an abundant life not a life of abundance. Not a life with a lot of money or things but a life with a lot of. . . . life.
So the picture of this abundant life in the Old Testament is the Promised Land. A place where there is Holy Spirit power to fight the giants (giant problems) in our lives not a place where there are no problems. It’s a place where there is abundant spiritual fruit not just abundant wealth. It’s a place where the real battles for territory in God’s kingdom are fought and sometimes lost if we are not careful. But most of us get to the “Place of The Crossing” and turn back. We see in the bible that twelve spies went in to see the Promised Land and only two of twelve wanted to enter. And most Christians today are the same way. Content with their “dry” walk with God in the desert. This “Place of the Crossing” is an important spot in the bible, it is the same place where John The Baptist did his ministry and it is where the Holy Spirit fell “upon” Jesus, and from then on He had great power, and it represents where it can fall “upon” us too.
So what I see in this entering of the Promised Land is a second baptism the first is the born again experience as pictured by the crossing of the Red Sea but the crossing of the Jordan is a picture of being baptized in the Holy Spirit as Jesus spoke about in Acts 1:5. Now you may say wait a minute, I received the Holy Spirit when I was born again. And well. . . you would be right. But there is more. There are three types of relationships to the Holy Spirit. There is the Holy Spirit with you, The Holy Spirit in you, and the Holy Spirit upon you. I will use the Apostles relationship to the Holy Spirit to illustrate this. In John 14:17 Jesus said to the Apostles, “The Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him, nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will soon be in you”. The Apostles could not receive salvation yet because Jesus had not yet died for their sins. And this for us is our relationship to the Holy Spirit before we receive the blood of salvation, the Holy Spirit with us. This is when the Holy Spirit works to bring a non believer to God. Now look in John 20:22. Jesus has died on the cross and is resurrected and He is with the Apostles. Jesus breathed on them and said to them “receive the Holy Spirit”. At this moment they are born again and the Holy Spirit is in them (like most of us). They could not receive the Holy Spirit until Jesus paid a price for their sin and neither could we. So now the Holy Spirit is in them. Then why didn’t they start doing things with power? It’s because there is more than just having the Holy Spirit in you! Now let’s look at Luke 24:49. Jesus said “I send the Promise of the Father upon you”. And Jesus said in Acts 1: 8 “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me”. So the Apostles waited and then on the day of Pentecost in Acts 23 “Tongues of fire came upon them.” And they became witnesses to Him. They were not just witnessing but they were a witness. When the Holy Spirit is upon you, you don’t go and witness you just are a witness where ever you go! Note that the Spirit in you is to refine and change you, and the Spirit upon you is for you to have the power to bring change to others.
So how do I receive this second Baptism? The same way you receive the first gift of salvation. Just like salvation you can’t earn it, and you can’t buy it. It comes simply by believing and asking. And the first thing is a step of Faith that it is real. The Israelites had to step out into the Jordan with the faith that the waters would part. The water did not part first it only did once they took a step of faith. And it stopped 50 miles upstream from them. So they had to have faith in something not seen. So once you have faith you must ask, just like we do for the gift of salvation. Jesus said in Luke 11:13 “If you being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” So ask.
So you say I have asked I pray and nothing happens. So what is in the way?
So what does the picture of the book of Joshua tell me about how they entered the Promised Land. Perhaps it will give us more clues of how we can receive the “Promise of the Father” the Holy Spirit upon us not just in us? Here is a little of the many things I found. When they crossed the river before they could get busy taking the land they had to build a monument of 12 stones (Joshua 4). To me this relates to us the “living stones” being united in body and in spirit. That’s why they built two 12 stone monuments, one for all to see on dry land (the body) and one in the river bed that got covered by the Jordan once it flowed (the spirit). This relates to Acts 2 “They (the 12) were all with one accord in one place” when the Holy Spirit flowed upon them. They were all of one accord. They were unified. Jesus prayed in John 17:20-26 three times for our unity. Why? Because it’s important! He prayed “that they all may be one” and again, “that they may be one just as We are one” and “that they may be made perfect in one”. In 1 Peter 2:5 it says “You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood.” We are the stones that make today’s memorial. But it’s not easy. And Satan wants us broken apart. If we look at the construction of the memorial the stones are taken out of the river and carried on the shoulders. This represents that we have to carry each other, work together and place others above ourselves to get the job done. Ephesians 5:21 Apostle Paul said we should be “Submitting to one another in fear of the Lord”. Submitting means to place others needs above yours or to lift them up. The rocks used are river rocks and that means they have spent time bumping into each other to be ready to be used. Until this memorial is in place the Israelites did not move forward. Until the memorial was built the water (Spirit) did not flow.
So what’s next in Joshua before they got busy and took the Promised Land? Look at Joshua 4:19. They camped at a place called Gilgal which means rolling. This is where they made the memorial and this is where they camped for a while and had a group circumcision as seen in Joshua 5:2-9. Well I’m not suggesting circumcision ... am I? Well not a physical one at least. This is where the comfortable get uncomfortable. But I feel this is where we get things rolling so to speak.
So let’s look at what circumcision means to us in the spiritual context instead of the physical context. It says they used flint knives, so what knife are we going to use? We should use the sharpest thing I know of, the word of God. So we use the word of God to trim away parts of our life that don't belong. So what does the act of circumcision represent? The most obvious is it represents a cutting away or removal of sinful behavior. What is sinful behavior? Anything that separates us from God. It could be surfing the web when I should be in the word. It might be any number of things. It might be that love of possessions like the rich young ruler who Jesus asked to give away all he had. If you place it first before God it’s what keeps you from God. If ministering to your possessions makes you too busy to take time to read God’s word or pray it might be something to look at. You might be in bondage to your stuff and it might be your master.
So maybe you still can’t identify anything like that what else could it be? Let’s go deeper. This is about the spirit not the physical. What keeps me from having the Holy Spirit flowing in me might be that I am operating from my intellect instead of from my heart, for me this was a big one and for me it was my intellect not wanting to speak in tongues. But it says in 1 Corinthians 14:1 I am to desire spiritual gifts. And so the word of God cut back my intellect and I feel now this is a sign and a seal for us spiritually just as circumcision was a sign and a seal physically. For some people their intellect won’t allow them to believe the gifts are for today and that they ceased.
In Ezekiel 47 Ezekiel sees a vision of water flowing out of the temple. This represents the Holy Spirit flowing. This is the type of place we want to be or we won’t make an impact for God’s kingdom. Not by might nor by power but by the Holy Spirit says the Lord. Well in Ezekiel 47 the source of the water is the alter. The thing that will get the Holy Spirit flowing for our life often is sacrifice. The thing that will get the memorial built is a cutting away of ourselves and placing others before us by giving up my jealousy of someone, or giving up my resentment toward someone who hurt me in the past. Giving up my fears that I carry because of my past experience and letting go of the bitterness about what happened. That’s what true Christ like love looks like. . In John 15:12 He said “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”. So how did He love us? He loved by sacrificing. He’s not asking here, He is commanding us. This is not optional.
Giving up control and trusting others. Placing others needs before my own. Laying down my own ambitions and agendas and not expecting others to. Having Love and compassion and grace for each other. Forgiving others if they make mistakes and not being offended by others if they point out mine. So it is true that all who are saved receive the Holy Spirit. But often we hold back parts of our lives and don’t let the Spirit control that part.
So you have the Holy Spirit but does the Holy Spirit have you?

I have said it before, Doc Watson is one of the greatest "Flat Picker" guitar players that has ever been. This is my fourth post of his music and he always delivers on the playing and when he talks you just get this great down home feeling. Doc Watson was playing Country Swing in the 1950s and in the early 60s started playing acoustic music at folk festivals like the Newport Folk Festival. He has be come an legend in Bluegrass music. This show was billed Doc Watson And Friends and has Sam Bush as a special guest. It has some great moments and the sound quality is pretty good.

A Ghost Story

Well it's late October when the kids dress up for Halloween and people decorate their homes with Jack-o-lanterns, black cats and ghosts. I already did a story on costumes this month so here is a ghost story of sorts. It is called
The Holy What? Or Who Is The Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) and What Does He Do?

Most Christianity today offers us life after death. In a world where people are dying of obesity and others are dying of starvation, a world where people are captive to the limitations of poverty while others are slaves to the possessions they are maintaining, most of today’s Christianity is offering people a life after death but most people are looking for a life before death. Jesus did not just come to prepare us to die but to teach us how to live. He wasn’t just about getting us up to heaven after we die but about bringing a taste of God’s kingdom to earth. Jesus was a revolutionary and the revolution He started did not conform to the ways of the world. His revolution is where the poor are blessed not the wealthy who seem blessed. His revolution is where the last are first. His revolution brings comfort to the disturbed and it disturbs the comfortable. Jesus spoke of an abundant life not a life of abundance. Not a life with a lot of money or things but a life with a lot of. . . . life. So why don’t we see a big difference in most Christians? It is simple the reason is their lack of a relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Of the three parts of God the most misunderstood and neglected is the Holy Spirit. Like the mention and discussion of Jesus divides and causes conflict between the world and the church, the mention and discussion of the Holy Spirit causes division in the church.
So what is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, and The Holy spirit is a person not an action, or event or a thing. He has a mind, Romans 8:28. He has a will, 1 Corinthians 12:11. He has emotions, Romans 15:30. He speaks, Hebrews 7. He teaches, 1 Corinthians 2:5. He can be grieved, Ephesians 4:30. He can be insulted, Hebrews 10:29. He can have communion (share closeness) with you, 2 Corinthians 13:14. He can be like us, the “Us” and “Our” refers to the Father , the Son and the Holy Spirit God said “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” Genesis 1:26
He has been there since the beginning. The spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the water. Genesis 1:2,
What is the Holy Spirit’s Purpose? His purpose is to glorify God and spread the kingdom of God. He does this by helping us witness to others. You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. . . . .and you shall be a witness to Me. Acts 1:8. The Holy Spirit does this through us by telling others what God has done. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak with other tongues. . . . about. . . .the wonderful works of God. Acts 2:4 and 2:11. Jesus said in John 16:14, “He (the Holy Spirit) will glorify Me.”
Where and with whom is the Holy Spirit? He is most evident in the hearts of followers of Jesus Christ. Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16. All believers can receive Him. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, 1 Corinthians 12:13.
What does the Holy Spirit do? He will guide us. “guide you in all truth”, John 16:13. He will tell the future. “tell you of things to come”. John 16:13. He will convict us. “convict the world of sin”, John 16:8. He will help us pray as we should. “for we d not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us.” “He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:26, 27. He lets believers know we are God’s children. “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:16. He teaches us. The Holy Spirit. . . . will teach you all things, and bring you to remembrance all things that I have said to you.” John 14:16. If we are led by the Spirit, He changes us. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.” Galatians 5:22, 23. He gives us spiritual gifts or powers to do God’s will. “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith. . . to another gifts of healings . . . to another workings of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of Spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works in all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills, 1 Corinthians 12.
So you may be a believer in Christ but be wondering or asking "How come I don't have evidence of this change or this power of the Holy Spirit in my life?" The evidence of the Holy Spirit will depend on your relationship with the Holy Spirit. First of all the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s power comes if you are in God’s will and not distracted by things of the world. Anyone who loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him and We will come to him and make Our home with him, John 14:23.
Those who love according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh. Those who live according to the Spirit the things of the Spirit, Romans 5:5. As for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. You must let the Spirit lead.
So You say I am keeping God’s word, I am living according to the Spirit, I feel I am in God’s will for my life. I see a change in me (fruit of the spirit) but I don’t see gifts or powers like the apostles had of healing, prophecy, words of knowledge, speaking in tongues. Jesus said that we would do greater things than Him when the Holy Spirit comes. So have we? Well I will address that and the three differnet types of relationship to the Holy Spirit in part two of the Holy Ghost, so stay tuned.

James Taylor, 4-25-70

Here is another one of those nice 1970 James Taylor shows. I like the first set better due to it does not have the hiss that is heard on the second set. But for a 1970 soundboard the whole thing is good. Each set comes in under 50 minutes and there are repeat songs, so you could just take the first set and then add the second set songs that are not repeats and get one nice "best of" CD.

Hot Rize, 6-18-98

Hot Rize, “one of bluegrass’s best and most historically significant quartets” (Nashville Scene), has reunited for their first US tour in over a decade, including recent high-profile performances at Bonnaroo and Telluride (“the 10,000 in attendance were ecstatic,” writes Jambands). The band has recorded new music for the first time in 20 years, including “Diamond Joe” and a rearrangement of “Wichita Lineman,” both available for free through HotRize.com.
So to celebrate that here is a mighty fine Hot Rize show from Telluride, with some special great special guests to make it even better.

Paul Barrere and FredTackett of Little Feat, 11-14-2009

This is Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett from Little Feat playing an all acoustic gig with Craig Fuller from Pure Prarie League sitting in the whole show. Craig also played with Little Feat for several years in the 80s. This has some real nice acoustic versions and is a real treat for any Little Feat fan. I also am throwing in a short radio broadcst of Little Feat from a New York recording studio. It is acoustic without drums. And it sounds great!

Mississippi John Hurt, 12-13-63

Mississippi John Hurt is authentic southern "country blues". Born and raised in Mississippi in 1893, Hurt learned to play guitar at age 9. He spent much of his youth playing old time music for friends and dances, earning a living as a farm hand into the 1920s. He started trying music as a profesion in 1923 and made recordings in in the late 1920s. The recordings didn't sell and the record company failed and Hurt returned to Avalon Mississippi and obscurity, working as a sharecropper and playing local parties and dances. In 1963, however, a folk musicologist, Tom Hoskins, heard his old recordings and was able to locate Hurt near Avalon, Mississippi. Hoskins encouraged him to move to Washington, D.C., and begin performing. His performance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival helped boost his popularity amongst the new folk revival audience. Many county and bluegrass artists were influenced by his authentic style and later Much of his repertoire was recorded for the Library of Congress.

Ray Charles, 9-20-64

Ray Charles is an American treasure. He didn't invent Soul Music but he refined it and made it sound like he did. I believe this is from a out of print record called "Ray Charles Live In Concert" ABC/Paramount 500 Released January, 1965
Recorded during a concert at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on September 20, 1964, According to what I found Ray Charles had no idea that this concert was being recorded. Ray’s manager, Joe Adams, solely came up with this idea and didn’t even tell the executives at ABC-Paramount Records. The end result was so successful that the record label purchased a brand new Cadillac for Mr. Adams.

Grateful Dead, Amsterdam, 10-16-81

This show was played on Bob Weir's birthday. It was from what I have heard a short notice gig and they played borrowed instruments. This show is full of surprises including and acoustic set. The first Lovelight since the death fo Pigpen in 1972, a rare Gloria (first one since 1965), and the only Hully Gully ever played. You can tell the band is having a fun time and letting the music play the band. Overall a fun listen.

Yellow Rock and Hackberry Canyon, Utah

In southern Utah there is a very large area that has been designated as the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This national monument spans nearly 1.9 million acres, and has very few roads. In the western part of the national monument is a dirt road that runs north to south called Cottonwood Wash Road. It is a rugged dirt road that is impassable in wet conditions and it sees light traffic. This road runs along the "Cockscomb" also known as the East Kaibab Monocline. This is a fold in the rock layers tilting them up at 45 degree angles in spots and forming a long ridge of strange rock formations due to the differential erosion of these layers of rock. West of this road is a large road less area that has few visitors that I like to visit. It has canyons with small streams, rock formations, slot canyons, and solitude that is hard to match. Along the East Kaibab Monocline is a large dome of sandstone called Yellow Rock. Yellow Rock sits on a ridge that divides Hackberry Canyon from the Paria River Canyon. Yellow Rock is a large bald dome of swirling colorful stone, and when I say large, I mean really large (like the size of a really large dome stadium). When I first came here this was my reason and destination but I found I loved the area because of the solitude and the many other attractions including slot canyons and rock formations. My favorite trip I have taken started where Hackberry Canyon cuts through the Monocline and meets Cottonwood Wash. I then traveled south down Cottonwood Wash for about 0.2 miles to the next small drainage coming down from the west. I walked up this drainage and took a trail which heads up to the right or north side of this small canyon. This trail climbs very steeply to a ridge then bends left or west, and once on the top it takes you to the massive form of Yellow Rock. Once at Yellow Rock I explored and climbed all over this crazy example of colored, patterned, and textured stone. There is no trail but you can't really get lost and it is pretty easy to walk around on. I have done this several times and it never gets old because you see something different each time. So this time I walked up to the top to see the great unblocked views in all directions of the surrounding areas. When at the top you will find that the northeast side of Yellow Rock drops off sharply into a deep narrow slot cut through the uplifted Navajo Sandstone. Looking northeast past the slot is a wonderland of slickrock domes including the prominent landmark of Castle Rock. Then after I got my fill I descended down off the large rock to the south where there is a sandy trail that I took that leads west into and area I call the rock garden, that has some free standing rocks of different shapes and sizes.
After about a mile or more I came to a trail junction where the Paria Box trail intersects the Yellow Rock trail. You can make a day hike loop of this if you take this left turn left here. It will take you to the Paria Box and back to Cottonwood Wash south of the Hackberry Canyon trailhead. Instead I stayed on the Yellow Rock trail that becomes just cow trails as you head north out of the rock garden area. After a little exploration of the Rock Garden I found a nice camp site among the rocks on the edge of Hackberry Canyon with fine views in several directions. I have camped here on a few occasions now, and I love the views, the solitude.
The next day I took the old cattle trail north for several miles along the ridge between Hackberry and The Paria. As I traveled north along this ridge top there were fine views to the northeast down into Hackberry Canyon.
And out to the west you can see wide areas including a prominent land mark mountain called Molly's Nipple, and the white cliffs of No Man's Mesa. To the north are the pink cliffs that make up Bryce Canyon National Park. Along the route there are many large areas of exposed rock with colors of white gray and even some more yellow areas. All with some strange shapes of spires, beehives and teepees, as well as flat textured areas. I camped the second night at one of these exposed rock areas at the top of Hogeye Canyon (a side canyon of the Upper Paria River Gorge). Out in this region there are no human footprints, no noise, just solitude. The next day I dropped into a side canyon of Hackberry Canyon called Sam Pollock Canyon where I passed some more interesting rock spires and shapes at the top of the canyon. I heard in this canyon there was a good sized arch called Sam Pollock Arch. It turned out to be a pretty nice arch carved out of the canyon wall that you can't miss as you travel down this canyon. I continued down Sam Pollock Canyon to where it meets Hackberry Canyon and turning south I splashed down the middle of the sandy stream bottom. In Hackberry Canyon there was a good amount of running water. I'm not sure if it runs all year or not. Lower Hackberry Canyon near Sam Pollock Canyon has red cliffs that are made up of the Kayenta and Moenave formations. As I approached Cottonwood Wash the cliff walls became much larger and closed in forming a narrow section as I passed through the East Kaibab Monocline that forms the Cockscomb. Here the walls of the canyon are towering Navajo Sandstone.
As you go through this narrow slot you are passing directly under Yellow Rock on the south side of the canyon. The walking is easy and just in a shallow sandy stream bed. I guess many people come just to day hike the Hackberry Canyon Narrows. The Narrows are short but impressive and I soon popped out at Cottonwood Wash where my car was parked. I have also hiked up to Yellow Rock from The Paria Box trail which takes you through some nice areas of the rock garden that are fun to explore. This route is alot longer to get to Yellow Rock but is not as steep and difficult. There is also a side trail from the Paria Box Trail to a rock formation called Red Top. It is a red colored rock formation that stands out among an area of mostly tan, white, or yellow rocks. This whole area is remote and good map skills and route finding ability are essential if you are going off trail at all. Up on the ridges there is no water so you have to pack it in, and any water in the canyons you must filter because of cattle ranching up stream.
To find the trailhead from Highway 89 between Page, AZ and Kanab, UT drive to between mileposts 17-18 and turn north on Cottonwood Wash Road. Drive 14.4 miles to a short pull off on the left (west) which is the trailhead for Hackberry Canyon. To find the trail to Yellow Rock, follow the trail from the parking area to the west, down into Cottonwood Wash and cross to the west side. A well traveled obvious trail continues west, to the mouth of Hackberry Canyon Narrows, but instead walk downstream (south) in Cottonwood Wash for approximately 300-400 yards. Look for another wash entering from the steep terrain to the west. Then hike west up this short side canyon and look for a path or trail. After about 100 yards, the trail leading west up this side canyon will turn right and lead north up a very steep, rocky and loose talus slope. You take many short switchbacks for .25 mile, an soon get to a ridge top. Continue up the ridge for another 100 yards to a saddle that separates Hackberry Wash to the north and the small side canyon you came out of. From the saddle, now head up the ridge to the west, past a few rock formations and through some slickrock fields and sand-dunes. Soon unmistakable Yellow Rock will come into view. There are no trails on yellow rock and you just find your way up to the top.
Where you will find unblocked views in all directions. South of yellow rock there is a sandy trail that heads west and eventually meets up with the Paria Box trail coming from the south. If you are going to explore the Yellow Rock and Hackberry Canyon area I recommend you read "Hiking and Exploring The Paria River" by Michael R. Kelsey. His maps are helpful and it helps with distances and route finding. His time estimations for me are low, as it always takes me a third to a quarter more time than it does him to cover the same distance (he must walk very fast). This book will give you a lot to explore, including many slot canyons (Buckskin Gulch, Willis Creek, Bullrush Gorge, Cottonwood Canyon Narrows, and Round Vally Draw), as well as the Paria River Canyon south of the highway down to Lees Ferry, and the Upper Paria River Gorge,
