Grateful Dead, Amsterdam, 10-16-81

This show was played on Bob Weir's birthday. It was from what I have heard a short notice gig and they played borrowed instruments. This show is full of surprises including and acoustic set. The first Lovelight since the death fo Pigpen in 1972, a rare Gloria (first one since 1965), and the only Hully Gully ever played. You can tell the band is having a fun time and letting the music play the band. Overall a fun listen.

Grateful Dead 9-28-75

OK back to normal for this blog. The Grateful Dead from this day in history 35 years ago. This was in the park in San Francisco. The band had just been in the studio during a long break from touring. They had just "re-invented" themselves so to speak. This is an example of some of the earliest Blues For Allah material played before a live audience. The artwork is my own painting inspred by the song Helps On The Way. I thought it was fitting for this show that opens with that song and was played on my birthday.

Grateful Dead 5-25-77

I wanted to post a 1977 Grateful Dead show since it is one of the bands strongest years. On many blogs the Ithica N.Y. 5-08-77 and Buffalo N.Y. 5-09-77 shows are posted and my favorite of 1977 the Winterland 6-09-77 is an official release I decided to go with this show. I feel it's very good. The Dead were just on fire during this period playing fantastic shows with a very dialed in sound. So here is my 1977 offering. it is a Charlie Miller re-master from the master reel so it is top quality!

Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers, 2-11-70

The Allman Brothers show was an official release but is now out of print so I'm puting an old bootleg copy on here to go with the well known Grateful Dead set that has the Allman Brothers and Peter Green as guests. If you dont have this you need to listen to the Spanish Jam with Garcia, Duane Allman, and Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac. Greg Allman sings on Lovelight with Pig Pen as well. This is a special show in my opinion.

Grateful Dead, 4-24-78

This show I feel is one of the better from 1978. The best have become official releases, 12-31-78, and the October Winterland shows. This has a nice Scarlet > Fire and some other high points. The Werewolves Of London is a kinda fun also. Oh, and the sound is good in that it is another Charlie Miller remaster.

Grateful Dead, 6-14-76

Some people are not big fans of the 1976 style of Grateful Dead but listen to this and you may change your mind. This is a recording of a band that has just taken a year off from touring and reinvented itself with a new style, new songs, and some new ways of playing old songs. This might be my favorite Crazy Fingers that I have heard and the sequence of Crazy Fingers into Dancin in the Street then into Cosmic Charlie is amazing. And the recording quality of this is just amazing.

Grateful Dead Studio Sessions 1975

There are a few compilations out there of cuts from sessions from 1975. There are just tons of it but much is just noodling and unfinished bits as they are trying to work out the Blues for Allah album. I found this to be the best of what I listened to so it's my version of the Blues For Allah sessions. I think three CDs is enough to keep anyone busy.

Here is a classic 1974 show. This show has the only Let It Rock ever played by The Grateful Dead (a song reserved for JGB). It has a fine Weather Report> Let It Grow > China Doll in the first set. Grateful Dead, Acoustic, 1980

It's been thirty years since the Grateful Dead played acoustic sets at 15 shows in a row at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco and then played 8 shows in a row with acoustic sets at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. They did this to record the album called Reckoning
When they did this it had been 10 years since the band had played acoustic shows so it was a pretty big deal. Thirty years later in hind sight it seems to be a real big deal since they really never did it again. And they kept playing for another 15 years. At these shows they also broke out songs like Birdsong, To Lay Me Down, Ripple, and Deep Elam Blues that had not been played in the last seven to ten years.

So here are two complete acoustic sets from the Warfield run (I think these are the best sounding ones). And some cuts from other shows to give you most of the songs that were played. I call it "Alternative Reckoning" Hope you like it.

First "Wall OF Sound" show!

This show is a historical moment for the Grateful Dead. These songs were first played at this show: Row Jimmy, Loose Lucy, Here Comes Sunshine, They Love Each Other, Eyes Of The World, China Doll, and Wave That Flag. This was also the unveiling of the "Wall Of Sound" sound system. It is amazing how they play Eyes Of The World and transition into China Doll being the first time playing these live.

Grateful Dead, Greek Theater, Berkely, CA. 4-23-82

Here is the last of the three show run from the Greek theater in May of 1982. After the first two fantastic shows you might think they couldn't keep the energy up. But a Shakedown Street > Promised Land opener of the first set tells you all you need to know.

Highlights for me are the Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain, a Casey Jones, and a Satisfaction encore. There is a motorcycle used as part of the Drums > Space. Again the sound quality is excellent.

This is the second show of a three show run at the Greek Theater, in Berkeley, CA. This is the Grateful Dead playing for a home town crowd. In front of a massive Tye Die background. This three show run is one of the best of the early eighties, and they didn't repeat a song in three shows. This is a Sat. evening show and it is a full three CDs. This is one of the best Lazy Lightning > Supplications ever.

The boys pick up where they left off from Friday night with another well played show. The Not Fade Away out of space is one of the highlights for me. Again the sound quality is top notch. A must for any fan of this band.

This is the first show of a three show run at the Greek Theater, in Berkeley, CA. This is the Grateful Dead playing for a home town crowd. In front of a massive Tye Die background. This three show run is one of the best of the early eighties, and they didn't repeat a song in three shows. This was a Friday night show. It is shorter than the two that followed but it does not lack intensity.
The second set is of note in that from the starting notes of Playin In the Band on they dont stop for the whole 2nd set linking all these songs together as if it were just one long piece of music. This some say is one of the best Playin > Uncle John's Band ever. I was there and I'll tell you it was a night to remember. The quality of the recording is excelent as well. It has long been one of my favorites.
